“My work involves large scale paintings reflecting conflicting senses of intimacy and glamour. The staged set-up and synthetic colour serve to emphasise the artifice, detaching the paintings from reality and suggesting a parallel world of Hollywood cinema and high-gloss fashion photography. These are not portraits in a traditional sense; the subject is the source photograph and the model’s role is that of an actor, there is nothing more than a suggestion of vulnerability, of the character beneath the veneer. I like the idea that there can exist an ambiguity and contradiction in the work, that it can be at once glamorous and intimate, intimidating and voyeuristic.”
